The America’s Got Talent judge, nicknamed Scary, said Geri’s decision to leave had left her heartbroken and devastated fellow members Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton and Mel C.

She said: ‘It was my birthday and I thought of all days she’s leaving on my birthday. What bothered me, not the fact that she left, of course that bothered, the fact she didn’t come to me.

‘I consider her as my best friend. Well, all of them, we’ve got really solid friendships. That bothered me more than anything, she didn’t feel like she could talk to me and just tell me what’s going on. She was just gone.’

The brunette beauty said the group were due on stage when they realised Geri had gone.

Mel said: ‘We searched for her in the hotel and we couldn’t find her. She’d got herself on the flight and headed back to England.

Unbeknownst to the group, Geri was battling a ‘horrendous eating disorder’ with Mel explaining: ‘She just felt no way out apart from to remove herself. Even that in itself made me feel so… of course I was a little bit angry because we had to re-do the whole show.

‘She was nowhere to be found. [I thought she’d been] kidnapped or something. We were all kind of a bit frantic. Then we found out she’d got on a flight and was heading back to England. Then we went into overdrive mode to re-do the show. I was trying to call her the entire time.’

Mel said the band didn’t know the real reason for a while, saying: ‘We didn’t find that out until way after. I wouldn’t have done that, but then everybody copes with pressure and different situations differently.

‘So I do understand it but it makes me go, ‘Oh’, a little bit.’

The former X Factor judge said the pair had settled their differences in the intervening years, saying: ‘I did [mention it recently]. We’ve had those conversations over the years.

‘She does put it down to the fact she couldn’t see a way out of it and she didn’t want to be up on stage and pretending to be so happy and everything together. I do understand it on a certain level.

‘The friendship it was just horrendous for me. I had to celebrate my birthday going, [fake sobbing] ‘Where is she?’

She continued: ‘In a weird way it made us closer, we got to understand each other more.’

Mel said her and Geri didn’t speak for a while as she was ‘angry and sad’ at her departure.

She said: ‘Weeks, absolute weeks. Then we were carrying on our tour. I was angry straight away and then just really sad. We just all scrambled.

‘I think everybody dealt with it in their own way. We’re all about our sisterhood and girl power, so to think one of our girls felt that bad that she just had to remove herself was really daunting.’

Asked if she’d react differently now, Mel said: ‘No’ adding, ‘I’d still be really hurt and offended.’

Geri’s departure from the band hit headlines across the world and the group went on hiatus two years later.

The Spice Girls shot to fame in 1996 when their debut single Wannabe reached number one in 37 countries.

The girl group reached the top of the UK charts nine times and had two number one albums.

When Geri left the band, she launched a solo career and enjoyed four number one singles in the UK.

Geri is the mother to Bluebell, 12, and Montague, who was born in January 2017.

She originally planned to reunite with Spice Girls band-mates Mel B and Emma Bunton for a reunion under new name GEM in 2016, but had to pull out when she became pregnant at the age of 43.

The Spice Girls did reform for a comeback tour in 2007, and a one-off performance at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

The interview comes after Mel  reassured Spice Girl fans that a reunion tour is ‘100 per cent’ happening – with or without band-mate Victoria Beckham.

The singer appeared on an pisode of The Late Late Show With James Corden earlier this month where she once again claimed the pop girl group will go on tour.

‘100 percent it’s happening,’ the star said on the US late-night talk show.

‘Scary’ Spice went on to reveal to the British comedic host that three other band members are ‘for sure’ joining her back on stage.

Emma Bunton, Mel C and Geri Halliwell are all set to return, but when asked on whether David Beckham’s wife would be joining them, Mel B replied: ‘Well, we’ll see about that one.’

Mel revealed that the successful fashion designer might join the group on a few select shows.
